Title: On the Implications of "Shi" in Ancient Theories about Calligraphy
Abstract: Three major implications can be found about the Chinese word Shi in ancient books: first, it means standard, the examples of which can be found in Cai Yong's On Nine Trends; second, it means power, the four elements of which are movement, strength, speed and tendency. Third, it means a name of certain style, such as the explanation the four articles explained in the book Four Different Kinds of Calligraphy. Among the three mentioned implications, the second one is the most commonly used and the third one appeared much later than the other two.
