Title: Association of carotid artery plaque with serum bilirubin level
Abstract: Objective To explore the relationship between serum bilirubin levels and carotid artery plaque. Methods 120 patients with cerebral infarction who were detected abnormal carotid artery intima by ultrasound were divided into carotid artery intima thickness group, hard plaque group and soft plaque group(Mixed plaque was classified as soft group). And at the same time,100 healthy subjects of general checkup who were detected IMT normal by ultrasound were detected.Their serum bilirubin levels were measured. The other risk factors, such as drinking, smoking, hypertension, body mass index, liver and kidney function were investigated. Results Total bilirubin and indirect bilirubin was significantly lower(P0.05) in cerebral infarction group than that in normal IMT group.Total bilirubin and indirect bilirubin was significantly lower in soft plaque group than that in carotid artery intima thickness group.Total bilirubin and indirect bilirubin was significantly lower in soft group than that in hard plaque group.Total bilirubin, indirect bilirubin and direct bilirubin were not significantly different in hard plaque group and carotid artery intima thickness group. Conclusion Serum bilirubin levels is closed related to carotid artery plaque. The lower serum bilirubin is important risk factors for predicting carotid plaque with cerebra infarction. The lower serum bilirubin may be a risk factor for plaque instability.
