Title: The Relationship between Carotid Artery Plaque and Matrix Metalloproteinases-3 in Patients with Cerebral Infarction
Abstract: Objective To study the intima-media thickness (IMT), plaque of the carotid artery and matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) in patients with cerebral infarction and the relationship between MMP-3 and the carotid IMT and plaque. Methods Using high resolution ultrasonic instrument, IMT and the plaque in the carotid artery were detected in 80 patients with cerebral infarction, 39 patients with soft carotid plaques, and 24 patients with hard carotid plaques, and 17 cases without carotid atherosclerosis. Serum concentration of MMP-3 was measured by enzyme linked immunoadsorbent assay (ELISA). Results Compared with control group, IMT, plaque in the carotid artery in patients with cerebral infarctiona significantly increased (P0.05). MMP-3 in patients with cerebral infarction were significantly increased (P0.05) as compared with that in control group. Conclusion There may be a close relationship between serum level of MMP-3 with pathogeny and the induction of disruption of arteriosclerosis plaque. MMP-3 play an important role in cerebral infarction.
