Methods Peripheral blood cells were stained with antibodies labeled with fluorescence and the expression of CD56, CD16 on CD8 + T lymphocytes were analyzed with flow cytometry as CD8 bright cells were gated. Results The expressions of CD56 +, CD56 +CD16 -, CD56 +CD16 + on CD8 + T lymphocytes in HAART nave HIV-infected individuals were significantly lower than those in HIV-negative healthy control( P 0.05 ). The expressions of CD56 +, CD56 +CD16 -, CD56 +CD16 + on CD8 + T lymphocytes showed an increased tendency after 6 months of HAART treatment. The absolute counts of CD8 + T lymphocytes expressing CD56 +CD16 - in HAART nave HIV-infected individuals was positively correlated with CD4 + T lymphocyte absolute counts, r =0.393, P 0.05 ;while the percentages of CD8 + T lymphocytes expressing CD56 -CD16 + was negatively correlated with CD4 + T lymphocyte absolute counts, r =-0.324, P 0.05. Conclusion The CD8 + T lymphocytes expressing CD56 were significantly depleted in HIV-infected individuals and the depletion may recover after HAART treatment. The expression of CD56 on CD8 + T lymphocytes is one of the important parameters in HIV infection and this parameter is useful in the evaluation of the efficacy of HAART therapy.Read More
