Title: Tribological Behavior of Nano-ZnO and Nano-SiO_2 Filled Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Composites
Abstract: Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWPE) based composites filled with nanometer ZnO and nanometer SiO2 were prepared by heat compression molding. The friction and wear behaviors of the composites sliding against AISI-1045 carbon steel disc under dry ambient condition were evaluated on a pin-on-disc test rig.The worn surfaces of the composites were observed by scanning electron microscope. It is found that the composites filled with the compound fillers of a proper mass fraction record smaller friction coefficient and wear rate than pure UHMWPE.The composites filled with 2%nano-ZnO+2%nano-SiO2 obtain better friction and wear properties.Compared with pure UHMWPE,its wear rate decreases 84.7%.The wear mechanisms of pure UHMWPE are mainly adhesive wear and fatigue wear, while the composites filled with inorganic nano-particulates of different mass fraction are characterized by adhesive wear, ploughing wear and plastic deformation in varying degrees.
