Title: The Rise of Translating Institutions in The Late Qing Dynasty and The Role of American Missionaries in China
Abstract: Between the First Opium War and the Westernization Movement, there appeared in China translating institutions with special characteristics, which almost were religious institutions in which American missionaries in China played a positive role that could not be replaced by the Chinese then, and their versions produced quite an important effect. These institutes became demonstrative examples for many national translating institutions appearing from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, and wrote a brilliant chapter in the modern history of Chinese translation.
