Abstract: In his masterpiece Four Dreams adapted from novels of the Tang Dynasty, Tang Xianzu is not mechanically following the predecessors in styles, but has brought the new out of the old by his creation of defining characteristics. In such a sense, these operas are of great difference from his predecessors' works. Tang Xianzu is an opera writer who has a strong sense of great responsibility for his times. With the help of adaptation, he has merged into his operas all his experiences and sensations of all his life, which has given complete expression to his thoughts for writing and his ideal for aesthetics. In brief, the connotations of Four Dreams are much richer than that of the novels of the Tang Dynasty.
