Title: Yu Pingbo the Person and the Studying of A Dream of Red Mansions
Abstract: The gains and losses of Yu Pingbo in his studying of A Dream of Red Mansions correlate with respectively his temperament. The observati on of his essays, new styled poems and traditional poems, in addition to his fri ends' review of the poet, shows clearly he embodies the personality of one as in the late Ming Dynasty. Such personality may help him with his deeper appreciati on of the classic, equipping him with a literary view that could even envied by Hu Shi, another traditional man of letters in China, so that he has achieved suc h success. Owing to the lacking of spiritual depth compared with Cao Xueqin, the author of A Dream of Red Mansions , he fails to dig deeply in this respect in th e study of the book, but only staying in the superficial level. Yet he protests that the writer's personality decides his writing, which is also true in his con dition as a writer.
