Title: The simulation of cross-hole electromagnetic fields using FDTD method
Abstract: In order to know more about the structure and electrical characteristics of media underground, this paper achieved the simulation of cross-hole electromagnetic fields response using finite difference time domain(FDTD)method. The excitation source in this paper was electric dipole whose investigation depth was relatively higher than magnetic dipole.Taken a vertical electric dipole on the borehole axis as the excited source,if assumed the media in the calculation was axis-symmetric to the axis of transmitting hole, the research area can be treated as a 2-D problem. Then a formulation of FDTD for 2-D cross-hole electromagnetic wave propagation was deducted. This method is applicable for electric dipole sources on any incident directions, especially for the wide bandwidth pulse which can not be described by finite difference frequency domain method. In this paper, there were two examples of the simulation, one is metal cylinder simulation, and the other is ore cylinder, which indicated that FDTD method can efficiently simulate the propagation of electromagnetic wave in cross-hole media,to show the propagation rule of electromagnetic wave. This method is suitable for the calculation of forward response of cross-hole electromagnetic fields inversion, with high speed, high accuracy and result stability.
