Title: The expression of cellular apoptosis gene Fas and FasL and caspase-3 activity after cerebral ischemia/reperfusion in the aged rats
Abstract: Objective To explore the changes of Fas and FasL gene expression and caspase-3 activity after local cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) in the aged rats. Methods The acute local ischemia/reperfusion model was made with the intraluminal filament technique, Fas and FasL expression and caspase-3 activity of the young and the aged rats were compared at 3 hours of middle cerebral artery occlusion, followed by 3, 6, 12, 24, 72 h of reperfusion. Results The expression of Fas and Fas1 after I/R in the ischemic brain of the aged rats were earlier than that in the young rats. The intensity of expression was higher than that in young rats. Caspase-3 activation point was located or later in the fastigium of Fas and FasL. Caspase-3 activation in the aged rats after I/R was earlier than that in the young rats. Conclusions Expression of cellular apoptosis related gene in aged rats after I/R of the old rats could character as early expression of Fas and FasL with high intensity and early caspase-3 activation.
