Title: Association of intima-media thickness of the carotid artery with coronary artery disease in patients with essential hypertension
Abstract: Objective To investigate the association of intima-media thickness (IMT) of the carotid artery with coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients with essential hypertension (EH). Methods According to the results of coronary angiography, 62 EH patients were classified to CAD group (n=28) and simple EH group (n=34). There were not significant differences in ages, gender and body mass index between two groups(P0.05). The IMT of carotid artery was detected with PHILIPS HD11 color Doppler ultrasonography. Results IMT was higher in CAD group than that in simple EH group [(1.12±0.33)mm vs (0.96±0.25)mm, P0.05]. Conclusion IMT of the carotid artery measured by ultrasonography in EH patients is a useful index in prediction of CAD.
