Title: ISSUES AND IDEAS FOR MOVING THE ATLANTA REGION AND ITS FREIGHT FORWARD
Abstract: This paper discusses a study conducted in order to: 1) aid the Georgia Department of Transportation to identify the particular issues affecting the use of the interstate system in Atlanta by trucks; and 2) use this information to facilitate examination of possible planning, infrastructure, logistical, operational, and financial strategies to increase mobility and safety for the general public and the trucking industry, as well as reduce air pollution and travel delays on the region's road system. The study addressed the specific travel characteristics, needs, and implications of the growth in truck travel to Atlanta's interstate highway system. The relationship of truck travel on the interstate system to the connecting arterial system is also explored. Lastly, the paper introduces the unique implementation plan proposed so the results of this work will actually end up impacting traffic and the road network.
