Title: Improving Freight Roadway Transportation with Dedicated Truck Lanes: Opportunities and Issues
Abstract: Truck traffic on highways in the United States has greatly increased, contributing to traffic congestion and higher costs due to delays and damage to pavement from heavy vehicles. Dedicated truck lanes (DTLs) could address these problems. Instead of every lane being constructed to withstand heavy axle loads, for example, only the dedicated lanes would have to be built to a higher standard. Operational issues involving lane changes and other maneuvers will present challenges. A business case is presented for funding dedicated truck lanes with financing from tolls and fees, or possibly from public-private partnerships. Intelligent transportation system applications could lead to virtual DTLs.
