Title: The Rate and Extent of Deforestation in Brazilian Amazonia
Abstract: Examination of the often contradictory estimates of the rate and extent of deforestation in Brazilian Amazonia leads to a ‘best estimate’ of the cumulative area of forest cleared through 1988 as 345 × 10 3 km 2 (including old clearings), or 8.2% of the 4 × 10 6 km 2 forested portion of Brasil's 5 × 10 6 km 2 ‘Legal Amazon’ region.
