Title: Introduction to the symposium: Amazonia — deforestation and possible effects
Abstract: The introduction starts with a short recapitulation of the already known ecological conditions which are fundamental for the forest ecosystem of Amazonia. These conditions must be kept in mind when studying or considering possible effects of the deforestation of the region. Then follows a brief explanation of the aims and of the motivations behind the actual deforestation of Amazonia, which began about two decades ago. Finally there comes an enumeration of the most evident foreseeable effects of that deforestation, relating them to the above-mentioned ecological conditions.
