Title: Policies affecting land use in the Brazilian Amazon
Abstract: This article argues that attempts by the government to reduce or stop deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon are far more likely to succeed If certain policies affecting land use are modified. The author first reviews the most recent estimates of deforestation in the Amazon region. He then briefly traces the evolution of regional development policies over the past 25 years with regard to their impact on the rainforest. The article concludes with several recommendations on how current policies could be altered in order to Improve their environmental impacts.
