Title: The metabolism of alcohol: on the validity of the Widmark equations, in obesity and in racial and ethnic groups.
Abstract: Reed and Kalant (1) have written that The Widmark calculation permits an estimation of R from the disappearance of alcohol from the blood, but it does not correct for the differences in the proportion of body fat. They previously noted (2) that The Widmark calculation, contrary to the statement by Bennion and Li [3], does not correct for differences in body habitus and subsequently (4) referred again to the need for correcting for proportion of body fat. I propose to show that the Widmark equation for R completely corrects for body fat via the r factor and is both a practical and theoretically sound estimate of alcohol elimination. There is no need to alter or reinterpret the original Widmark formulations. I propose also to show that the Widmark equations are applicable to the study of group differences in the metabolism of alcohol.
