Abstract: Key Words: Translation, variability, quality
The present study aims to find out divergences between two versions of translation of The Old Man and The Sea and differences in terms of their quality. The first version was produced by Dian Vita Elliyati while the second one was produced by Yuni Kristianingsih Pramudhaningrat.
The study is a descriptive research with qualitative approach. Data related to differences between the two versions of translation were gathered through content analysis and questionnaire. They were analyzed through comparison.
Research data analysis indicates that to a certain degree the two versions of the translation are divergent one another in relation to the ways the message of source text was rendered into the target texts and to their quality. The first version tended to be oriented to the target language evidenced by 1) the provision of additional information in the form of annotation, 2) the adaptation of concepts or cultural terms, 3) the use of specific equivalence, 4) the rendetion of address forms based on the context of target language cultural context, and 5) the use of equivalence on the basis of pragmatic force considerations. In addition, the two versions of the translation have the same level of accuracy. Nevertheless, the translation produced by Dian Vita Elliyati is more acceptable and readable for the target readers. This is due to the fact that she is sensitive towards the contexts of situation and culture as well as to the function and purpose of the translation.
Based on the research findings, it is suggested that those engaged in translation practices need to consider to whom their translation is targetted in order to produce not only an accurate but also acceptable and readable translation. It is assumed that the differences between the two versions of the translation result from the employment of difference translation strategy and approach. In relation to this, there is a need to conduct further research to prove the assumption.
