Intelligent transport systems (ITS) represent the information technology connections (communications, sensing, computing, and control) that enable the vehicles and infrastructure to function as a well‐regulated integrated system. Implementation of such an integrated system requires cooperation among the roadway infrastructure, motor vehicle, and information technology industries, including both public and private sector organizations. This chapter explains the benefits to be gained from implementation of a wide variety of ITS technologies as well as the challenges of introducing them to the market. The diverse state of ITS development in different regions of the world is described and explained, and some future directions for ITS advancement are suggested.Read More
