Title: The last 70 kyr of Rano Aroi (Easter island, 27ºS) peat record: New insights for the Central Pacific paleoclimatology
Abstract: En la tesis titulada: Last 70kyr of Rano Aroi (Easter Island, 27oS) peat record: New insights for Central Pacific paleoclimatology se presenta una reconstruccion climatica y ambiental de la isla de Pascua para los ultimos 70.000 anos. Para este proposito se han estudiado dos sondeos de 14 y 4 metros, extraidos del centro y margen respectivamente, de la turbera de Rano Aroi. La descripcion de facies y el modelo de edad permiten deducir que la la acumulacion de turba se inicio hace mas de 70.000 anos representando, hasta la fecha, el registro mas antiguo de estas caracteristicas del Hemisferio Sur. Para determinar los cambios en el tipo de turba acumulada se han obtenido los perfiles de carbono, nitrogeno y azufre total (TC, TN, TS) de la materia organica asi como la isotopia estable de cada uno de estos elementos (?13C, ?15N, ?34S). Para conocer las caracteristicas del contenido mineral se han efectuado medidas mediante un escaner de sondeos de fluorescencia de rayos X, obteniendo asi la variabilidad del contenido en calcio, hierro y titanio. Mediante espectrometria de absorcion atomica (ICP-AES) se ha obtenido la concentracion de los elementos mayoritarios, minoritarios y traza de la fraccion inorganica. Esta aproximacion geoquimica se ha complementado con el estudio de macrofosiles (semillas, restos de insectos) y la determinacion del contenido polinico del registro, lo que ha permitido reconstruir la historia tanto de la vegetacion de la turbera como de la cuenca. La combinacion de datos geoquimicos y biologicos ha permitido establecer tres condiciones hidricas (inundacion, sequia, condiciones de base) de la turbera que se han ido alternando durante el Pleistoceno tardio y Holoceno. La variabilidad en la composicion quimica de la turba, asi como la sucesion entre los distintos estadios hidrologicos, han sido determinados por tres procesos principales: eventos de elevada precipitacion, condiciones de sequia extrema y cambios de vegetacion de la cuenca. La correlacion de la historia ambiental de Rano Aroi con otros registros de la isla y del Circum-Pacifico han permitido deducir los cambios en la circulacion atmosferica y oceanica del Pacifico Central, una zona muy poco estudiada hasta el momento a nivel paleoclimatico. En concreto, el registro de Rano Aroi indica que los episodios de maxima precipitacion de la isla correlacionan con periodos estadiales frios definidos en el Atlantico Norte a lo largo del ultimo ciclo glacial. Durante estos estadiales, la zona de convergencia intertropical (ITCZ) se desplazo hacia el sur y la zona de convergencia del pacifico sur (SPCZ) hacia el este. El clima en el Pacifico central tambien esta ampliamente influenciado por las dinamicas de altas latitudes, como los cambios en la formacion de aguas intermedias antarticas o la posicion de los vientos meridionales del oeste.
