Abstract: From one point of view Chinese civilization and culture1 is ancient which has enriched human history with philosophy, masterpieces of painting, porcelain and great works of literature. But the history of modern China presents a sad spectacle of a nation in crisis. The prolonged and protracted crisis finally exploded in 1949 with the establishment of a communist regime on the Chinese mainland and Chiang KaiShek's forces were pushed out on the island of Taiwan. Since then Communist China has emerged as a great power in contemporary affairs.
