Abstract: The Chinese Diaspora is one of the most ancient in the world, and the most numerous. It is widespread in South East Asia. One must however also take into account the Chinese of Taiwan, separated from Peking since 1949, as well as the Chinese of Hong Kong and Macao who, though Chinese citizens once again since 1997, enjoy a special status. After reviewing the main phases of the Diaspora, the author focuses on contemporary issues, on the the importance of the role of the Chinese from Hong Kong, Taiwan and South East Asia in the development of China since the 1980s. Lastly, the extraordinary emergence of China in Africa since the year 2000 is underlined.
