Abstract: El adjetivo «Togatus» y Ia comedia «Togata» Cuando en los albores de Ia historia del teatro latino x el comediógrafo Titinio implantó un nuevo tipo de comedia, diferente de Ia inspirada en Ia Néa griega, que habían adaptado a Ia escena romana Livio Andronico y, siguiéndole, Gneo Nevio y Plauto, esa innovación suya recibió el nombre de fábula togata.La razón primordial de tal denominación es clara: si Ia vestimenta griega del tipo habitual de comedia había servido para denominarla fábula palliata, Ia de los personajes romanos o itálicos de las obras de Titinio sugería una denominación a partir de Ia toga, el vestido nacional. 2.Sin embargo, ¿podría haber influido en Ia adopción de ese nombre algún otro tipo de connotación que no fuera precisamente Ia del vestido de los personajes?O, dicho de otra manera, ¿el nombre de fábula togata denotaba alguna característica especial de ese tipo de comedia, como podría ser Ia categoría social de sus personajes?Estimamos que un estudio semántico del adjetivo togatus en Ia latinidad clásica '' puede ayudar a esclarecer esta cuestión.l.-TOGATUS = TOGA INDUTUS.El valor primario y fundamental del adjetivo togatus debería ser, en pura lógica, el de «vestido con toga».Ahora bien, en contra de Io que suele ocurrir, el valor no carac-
