Abstract: The nrma traffic and safety department, on 11-15 February 1985, surveyed the full length of the hume highway. The survey measured lane widths and types, signposting, linemarking and speed zones, investigated selected crash blackspots, and assessed pavement, edge and shoulder conditions. A computerised highway survey inventory system was used. Results of similar surveys of the hume highway since 1971 are compared. The report concludes that an impressive volume of roadworks was underway, with almost half the highway length now of 4 lane divided highway standard. Road geometry has improved, towns have been bypassed, and crashes reduced (a).
