Abstract: The NRMA survey team carried out an 'inventory' survey of the pacific highway from Sydney to Brisbane in July, 1978. The survey route included NSW state highway no 26 from Calga to ourimbah, the Newcastle bypass route and Brisbane's south east freeway. The survey has shown that the route is well below adequate standard. Only 41.4 Km (36%) of the Sydney - hexham section was divided while 53.2 Km (46%) was only 2 lanes wide. Conditions were particularly substandard between Wyong and swansea. Only 27 separate multilaned sections suitable for overtaking were located in the 635 rural kilometres between hexham and the NSW/ Queensland border. Overtaking was restricted for 32% of this distance. Major alterations to the lane configuration between April, 1975 and July, 1978 involved only 1% of the rural length. Only 6% of the total length of the highway in NSW was divided. Forty six percent of the undivided highway in NSW had lanes narrower than 3.7M while 15% had lanes narrower than 3.4M. The pavement was often in poor condition north of bulahdelah. Five hundred and sixty five curve warning and advisory speed signs were located in NSW. The accident statistics for the 12 month period ending 30/9/77 were relatively favourable compared to other similar highways.
