Title: SYSTEM CONFIGURATIONS IN URBAN TRANSPORTATION PLANNING
Abstract: URBAN TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES SHOULD BE PLANNED, DESIGNED AND OPERATED AS A UNIFIED SYSTEM. ACCORDINGLY, SOME OF THEIR SYSTEM CONFIGURATION ASPECTS ARE ANALYZED WITH EMPHASIS ON HIGHWAY NETWORKS. TWO APPROACHES ARE UTILIZED' /A/ EMPIRICAL ANALYSES OF EXISTING AND PROPOSED SYSTEMS, AND /B/ TRAVEL PATTERNS SIMULATED FOR A HYPOTHETICAL COMMUNITY OF NEARLY 3 MILLION PEOPLE WITH VEHICULAR TRIPS ASSIGNED TO A SERIES OF ALTERNATE NETWORKS. BOTH STUDIES CLEARLY EMPHASIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF AVOIDING ROUTE CONVERGENCE IN AREAS OF HIGH TRIP DENSITY. /AUTHOR/
