Abstract: This paper attempts to answer the question can the United States achieve a major breakthrough in traffic accident prevention? This question is being asked with greater concern as the toll of highway fatalities, injuries, and economic losses continue to grow. The answer will depend in large part on what is done the future. In the search for more effective traffic accident prevention programs there is both a big place and an urgent need for the help of the private sector. In the field of engineering education the private sector has made many contributions which have advanced the safety and efficiency of highway transportation. Through scholarships, fellowships, and grants to help defray overhead costs, private organizations have made numerous contributions. Such financial help form the private sector has increased the supply of trained manpower available to government agencies. This has been true not only in highway transportation engineering but also in such fields as traffic police administration, safety education, administration of traffic safety organizations, and highway and traffic law. This availability of scholarships and fellowships ahs encouraged a number of colleges and universities to offer course related to highway transportation and had a tremendous benefit to the field of traffic safety.
