Abstract: There are steps that transportation agencies can take to help save lives on the roads. That is a key finding of a recent report by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association. The report, Federal Highway Program and Highway Safety: An Economic Analysis, retrospectively analyzes public highway investment and traffic fatality and injury rates. Federal studies have shown relatively low-cost and targeted road and roadside capital improvements save lives, prevent injuries, and are highly cost-beneficial. For example, constructing a median that separates traffic can reduce fatalities 73 percent.
