Abstract: The price to be paid for the advantages of automatic systems, in the field of quality of service and of easy operation, is considered acceptable by operators. A financial balance sheet is drawn up. It is shown that the economic balance sheet of fully automatic underground railway lines is clearly positive. It is in practice confirmed by the example of the D-Line in Lyon. The introduction into the urban transport market should become more pronounced during the next years. A table gives the cost-aspect of the Kobe underground (Japan).
