Abstract: The better management of Australia's 500,000 kilometers of unsealed roads will lead to efficiency gains and result in significant benefits to the Australian community. The release by the Australian Road Research Board Limited of the 'Unsealed Roads Manual - Guidelines to Good Practice', provides the practitioner dealing with unsealed roads with guidelines to enable a more efficient management of this resource. The guidelines contained in the Manual are intended for general use as they are not able to cover the extensive range of terrain, local materials and climatic conditions found through Australia. Local operating conditions must take precedence over the general measures outlined in the Manual. When dealing with anything as dynamic and variable as an unsealed road, local experience is paramount. This paper describes the Manual, and discusses some of the major points highlighted in the Manual.
