Abstract: The author considers the problem posed by a lack of standardisation among Europe's railways and puts forward the case for joint research in the high-speed railway sector. It is suggested that joint research will avoid direct confrontation between the governments and industries of the various European countries and the need to make a choice among existing national systems. Joint research will speed up the transition from a national to a European network. Unification at the European level should make it possible to reduce costs by producing standard components in large quantities. It will also be possible to share the costs of research. A project called EURET which is carrying out work on a European Train Control System is cited as an example. The framework set out by the European Commission for a 4-point research programme over 5 years is outlined. This paper was presented at the EURAILSPEED 92 conference held in Brussels, April 27-29, 1992. For the covering abstract see IRRD 853180.
