Title: STUDY OF ATTITUDINAL AND BEHAVIORAL ASPECTS OF URBAN TRAVEL
Abstract: The objective of this article is to determine whether the stated attitudes of a low-income population towards bus service are consistent with attitudes that are directly linked to actual travel behavior. Using questionnaires it was found that expressed travel attitudes are quite consistent with attitudes associated with first-hand travel experience as expressed through detailed travel dairies. This research also demonstrates that the expressed travel attitudes, which reflect deficiencies and inadequacies in the local transit are justified in terms of the conditions that actually exist within the transit system. Specifically, these unfavorable attitudes are a consequence of infrequent bus service on weekends and other off-peak periods and excessive time delays that reflect the need to use a transfer. This research is designed to make a unique comparison between attitudes reflected through actual travel behavior and attitudes toward travel behavior that were stated during a formal interviewing process.
