Title: CODE OF PRACTICE FOR TRAFFIC CONTROL AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS
Abstract: The Code of Practice for Traffic Control and Information Systems for All Purpose Roads (the Code) sets out a structured approach to the whole life-cycle of a traffic control or information system from concept to decommissioning where safety considerations are built-in at each step. The primary aim is to encourage consistent and safe design practices throughout all UK Highways Authorities. The Highways Agency (the Agency) has produced the Code in consultation with the DETR, the UK Highway Authorities and Industry and has published it in the Agency's Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) to be known as TA 84/01. The Code provides a tool enabling highway authorities to be aware of and comply with standards for designing, operating and maintaining their traffic control and information systems on all-purpose roads. It also provides the means to demonstrate that those standards have been applied to a system in a safe and consistent manner. When the IHIE (Institute of Highway Incorporated Engineers) organised a conference last year on the Code of Practice, it became clear that there were still a lot of questions amongst traffic engineers about its implementation. This paper sets out to clarify these practical issues. (A)
