Title: Assessment of In Situ Quality and Durability of Cement- and Lime-Stabilized Subgrade Soils in Northern Ohio
Abstract: Stabilized subgrades often form an important part of the structural flexible pavement system. If the stabilized layer is a structural contributor, then it must be relied upon to provide durable and consistent performance. This is difficult in wet, northern climates where deeply penetrating freeze-thaw activity causes the pavement layers to lose strength and stiffness. These conditions are exacerbated with traffic. This study describes the in situ stiffness, verified by the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) and strength, verified by the Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP), of portland cement and hydrated lime stabilized low plasticity clay and silt subgrades that have provided service for over ten years at in northern Ohio at the time of testing. An approach to pavement design that incorporates these stabilized layers is discussed based on the findings of this study.
