Title: Selection of cows for treatment of udder infections in AMS herds
Abstract: The selection of cows for veterinary treatments of udder infections in 20 Danish Dairy herds using automatic milking systems (AMS) was described by interviews and data analysis. The methods used to identify cows with mastitis were related to the type of AMS installed in the herd. With one type of AMS the farmers primarily relied on the alarm lists on conductivity from the AMS, whereas the farmers with another type of AMS primarily used their own observations to detect cows with mastitis. 5 out of the 12 farmers with the second type of AMS found that mastitis was detected at a later time after introduction of AMS. Despite the limited use of the information from the AMS to detect cows with mastitis the number of cows treated for mastitis increased from 0.44 treatments per cow year to 0.61 treatments per cow year during the first year after introduction of AMS. The time of treatment in relation to stage of lactation was unchanged. The udder health accessed by analysis of the individual cow somatic cell counts (SCC) only showed small and temporary changes after introduction of AMS.
