Abstract: This article describes how managing electromagnetic disturbances is vital in retaining safety standards on a railway network. The author explains the latest guidelines and techniques for the efficient and effective electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Electromagnetic interference occurs when electronic equipment malfunctions due to electromagnetic disturbances. Indeed, EMC is defined as “the ability of a device, equipment or system to function satisfactorily in its electromagnetic environment without introducing intolerable disturbance to anything on that environment. The article describes how poor EMC management and control can result in operational problems, which in extreme cases can have direct effect on the safety of the rail network.
