Abstract: Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) compliance is now an essential feature of any product development for railway applications given the stringent requirements for reliability and safety. In some territories such as Europe there are legal obligations for demonstrating conformity with essential requirements for EMC. The challenge for designers is to achieve the EMC objectives in addition to the functional specification requirements. The article discusses the ways this complex issue can be managed effectively by the application of tried and tested control methods.
