Abstract: The new Alameda Corridor serving Long Beach and Los Angeles more than doubles average speed of freight trains and, at $2.4 billion, is one of nation's largest public works projects. It passes through eight cities on its trip to ocean and consolidates four branch lines operated by Union Pacific, Santa Fe, former Southern Pacific and a former Pacific Electric route. Key element is the Trench, 500 ft.-wide, 10 mi.-long, double- and triple-track running 30 feet below companion Alameda St. Built under Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority, jointly governed by Los Angeles, Long Beach, both ports and Los Angeles Country Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
