Abstract: April 12, 2002 was the official starting date for the $2.4 billion Alameda Corridor project, putting below-grade modern track through downtown Los Angeles in order to expedite cargo movement between ships at the Los Angeles ports and the Union Pacific rail yards. The three- track 10-mile section through the heart of downtown is landscaped at grade and permits freight to move at triple the speed in the past. Major intermodal yards are being built to reduce need for truck drayage.
