Title: Top-Notch Vehicle Maintenance Programs Help Transit Agencies Excel
Abstract: This article focuses on five transit companies and how they’ve each improved their maintenance programs in response to tight budgets. Metro Transit-St. Louis in 2002 made organizational changes that united its bus, van and rail maintenance departments under one leader. The transit agency’s leadership revamped its maintenance procedures based on extensive research of OEM manuals, recommendations from industry and management’s experience. The revised program focused on maintenance at the mid-life of the vehicle, which stretched vehicle life years past the industry norm. The Indianapolis Public Transportation Corp. also underwent organizational reorganization, and moved away from reactive to a proactive planning schedule and segmented its vehicles into six smaller fleets each headed by a maintenance supervisor responsible his or her sub-fleet. Central Florida Regional Transportation Authority in Orlando uses “Roadeo Style Training” to help employees think on their feet and diagnose problems. Breckenridge, Colorado’s Free Ride Transit System, with a fleet of only 13 buses, uses preventive maintenance techniques.
