Title: INTERACTION BETWEEN TRANSIT ENGINEERS AND TRANSIT PROFESSIONALS--THE NORTH CAROLINA EXPERIENCE. SESSION 17
Abstract: Cooperation between transportation engineers and transit professionals is essential in assuring efficiency of the transportation system. At times their roles seem to differ. Some problems encountered by public transit are those of all vehicles in the traffic stream while others are intrinsic to transit operations and vehicles. The North Carolina Division of the Institute of Transportation Engineers now regularly has one of its quarterly meetings as a joint conference with the North Carolina Urban Public Transportation Forum, bringing together transit operators and system managers, transportation planners, ridesharing program managers, city administrators, transit authority members and policy makers. Suggestions are made on setting up such sessions and developing a program. The benefits are called significant and justify the time and effort. North Carolina transportation professionals are now working cooperatively to achieve an effective transportation system.
