Abstract: In defining a pharmacopoeia as an instrument for the quality control of medicines in the public health field, the author illustrates the origin, history and development of the European Pharmacopoeia since the Brussels Treaty in 1948. 20 countries are now applying the European Pharmacopoeia standards; they are based on an international Convention, which is a sort of law-making and institutional treaty.
