Abstract: According to the World Health Organization Index of Pharmacopoeias (WHO/PSM/QSM/2006.2, 2006) there are approximately 44 countries that either publish pharmacopoeias or have pharmacopeial commissions. There also are two regional pharmacopoeias—the European Pharmacopoeia and the African Pharmacopoeia as well as WHO's International Pharmacopoeia. Some pharmacopoeias are published and updated on a regular basis while some appear to be inactive or the country's pharmacopeial commission actually appears to have never published a pharmacopoeia. It is generally agreed that the three major pharmacopoeias are the European Pharmacopoeia, the Japanese Pharmacopoeia, and the United States Pharmacopeia. Each is recognized in its respective countries' laws, and drugs marketed in these countries must meet the requirements of the respective pharmacopoeia. Understanding the basis for this legal recognition as well as how these pharmacopeias operate is critical for anyone involved in the pharmaceutical community.
