Title: HYDRODYNAMIC PERFORMANCES OF CONTRA-ROTATING PROPELLER (CRP): NUMERICAL ANALYSIS
Abstract: This paper presents a numerical method recently developed to analyse the hydrodynamic performance of contra-rotating propellers operating in uniform and non-uniform flow. The vortex lattice method is employed to calculate blade loadings. The existence of the boss is taken into account by using a panel method. A trailing vortex wake model for contra-rotating propellers is proposed, in which interactions between the forward and aft propellers are considered. For efficient numerical calculations of unsteady blade loadings, a mathematical treatment is made, especially for the forward and aft propellers operating at unequal angular velocities and in non-uniform flows. Corresponding computer programs have been developed, with which the steady and unsteady performances of several sets of contra-rotating propellers were analysed. The numerical results were found to agree satisfactorily with available experimental data.
