Title: THE POTENTIAL FOR CARPOOLING TO INCREASE AVERAGE VEHICLE OCCUPANCY ON THE TRI-STATE TOLLWAY
Abstract: Over the last two decades, more commuters chose driving alone to work over other available travel modes such as carpooling, vanpooling, or public transportation. In the context of growing concerns about traffic congestion and air quality, transportation officials have proposed and, in some cases, implemented an array of measures to reduce the number of vehicles on the highways by encouraging commuters to travel together to work. They include high occupancy vehicle lanes, park and ride lots and ridesharing programs. The need to abate the number of vehicles on the highway has been established. Still unknown is whether the potential that exists for increasing vehicle occupancy throuhg carpooling can be achieved. This paper assesses the possibility of achieving this potential by using survey data collected from Tri-State tollway motorists passing through the Cermak toll plaza.
