Abstract: The authors discuss ways to increase traffic flow on highways. They note that mixed use highways have always been considered dangerous. Although intelligent vehicle highway systems showed promise, the concept has not proven to be as successful as hoped. Some ideas that might help include robotic trucks for freight transportation, and utilization of a right of way in a more productive manner. The latter idea can use metropolitan personal transporter systems or occupancy rated vehicle architecture. The metropolitan personal transporter system can utilize a very small vehicle, called an econobox, which will ride in guidelanes above highway traffic. Occupancy rated vehicle architecture is a vehicle/system architecture for drivers driving alone. The vehicle would be even smaller than an econobox, and would also use guidelanes traveling above the traffic.
