Abstract: The overriding premise in this study is that fixed route intercity bus transportation is important to Iowa and its people. It is essential to meet the needs of Iowans who rely on bus transportation for hospital trips, trips to educational facilities, business and recreational trips. In rural areas the needs for short distance trips to doctors and nutrition sites are being addressed by the rural public transportation systems. Some of these also provide for transportation to shopping facilities and other nearby recreational trips. Similarly the metropolitan transit systems provide for short trips within the urban areas. Intercity bus, on the other hand provides for longer distance trips that are unserved in any other way. Ideally, intercity bus service would provide for trips to major population centers, major medical facilities, colleges and universities and recreational sites within the state and trips beyond the state as well.
