Abstract: THIS PAPER INTRODUCES A METHOD FOR FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT DESIGN WHICH TAKES INTO CONSIDERATION FORECASTED TRAFFIC DEVELOPMENTS, THE SUBSOIL OR SOIL CONDITIONS, THE REQUIRED DURABILITY OF THE PAVEMENT ITSELF AND THE PHYSICAL AND ECONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THOSE BUILDING MATERIALS ACTUALLY AVAILABLE IN INDIVIDUAL CASES. IN ADDITION, IT ANALYZES THOSE PARAMETERS NECESSARY FOR CALCULATIONS, AND IN PARTICULAR THE INTRODUCTION OF A CRITERION FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF THE TRAFFIC FACTOR, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ITALIAN ROAD NETWORK. THE OPTIMAL THICKNESSES OF THE INDIVIDUAL LAYERS OF SUPERSTRUCTURE ARE ESTABLISHED WITH THE AID OF DESIGN TABLES. FINALLY, THE DESIGN METHOD IS APPLIED TO TWO TYPICAL EXAMPLES.
