Abstract: Empirical or semi-empirical flexible pavement design methods such as CBR design method have the disadvantage that there is little scope for extrapolation outside the limits of experience and also, the mode and the extent of failure cannot be predicted. Analytical design methods consist of finding the thickness of pavement layers based on their stress-strain characteristics. Using such methods, it is possible to estimate the extent of cracking or rutting in a flexible pavement over a given period of time. Based on studies conducted on the performance of several pavement sections on National Highways and laboratory investigations on pavement materials, an analytical method for design of flexible pavements has been presented taking into account fatigue cracking and rutting of pavements.
