Title: The Machakos Protocol and prospects for peace in Sudan : peacemaking
Abstract: The Machakos Protocol, signed under the auspices of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in August 2002 remains the most promising peace initiative yet in the Sudan. Earlier peace attempts, including the 1947 Juba Conference, 1956 Roundtable Conference, 1972 Addis Ababa Agreement, and the Abuja I and Abuja II talks (immediately preceding the IGAD peace process in 1993), among several other bilateral and multilateral attempts, have not succeeded in getting the parties to confront the core issues or guaranteeing the fulfilment of agreements.
